State Infrastructure Strategy 2022-2042

Achieve an orderly and efficient transition to Net Zero

Overview

The NSW Government has adopted a goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050 and a 50% cut in emissions by 2030. The 2020 Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap sets a pathway for this transition. However implementation requires a range of policies and initiatives to secure a new wave of investment in electricity reliability and affordability, predominantly by the private sector and through market mechanisms.

This requires Government to work closely with not only industry, but with communities affected by the gradual transition to a Net Zero economy.

Strategic directions

These are the strategic directions to best meet the challenges and opportunities of this theme. They inform specific recommendations.

Ensure that the clean energy transition is orderly and cost effective.

Preserve a market-based approach to investment in electricity generation, transmission and retail to minimise the need for government subsidies.

Support a new wave in transmission infrastructure in a manner consistent with community expectations.

Pursue cost-effective initiatives to reduce emissions from State assets and infrastructure.

Recommendations

These are the recommendations and sub-recommendations for this objective. The recommendations are numbered as they appear in the report.
